Whippet: The Graceful and Gentle Sighthound

History and Origin

The Whippet originated in England during the 18th century, bred by miners and factory workers for racing and hunting small game. Developed from Greyhounds and smaller terriers, they were known as the "poor man's racehorse" due to their popularity in coursing and track racing. Today, they remain a beloved companion breed.

Appearance

Whippets are medium-sized dogs with a streamlined, athletic build. Males stand 19–22 inches tall at the shoulder, females 18–21 inches, weighing 25–40 pounds. Their short, smooth coat comes in a variety of colors and patterns, including brindle, black, blue, fawn, red, and white. Distinctive features include a long, tapering head, rose-shaped ears, and a deep chest that tapers to a tucked abdomen.

Temperament and Behavior

Whippets are gentle, affectionate, and quiet companions. They are known for their calm demeanor indoors but possess a burst of energy when running. They bond closely with their families and can be reserved with strangers. Their sighthound instinct may trigger chasing small animals, so caution is needed during off-leash time. They are generally good with children and other dogs.

Suitable Living Conditions

• Families with children: Excellent – gentle and patient, but supervision is recommended with very young children.
• Apartment living: Ideal – they are quiet and low-energy indoors, but need daily exercise.
• First-time owners: Suitable – they are eager to please and easy to train, though their sensitivity requires positive reinforcement.

Whippets require at least 30–60 minutes of exercise daily, including a safe, fenced area to run off-leash. They enjoy sprinting and chasing toys. Mental stimulation can be provided through puzzle toys, obedience training, and scent games. Without adequate exercise, they may become destructive.

Grooming Needs

Their short coat is low-maintenance; weekly brushing with a soft brush or hound mitt reduces shedding. Bathe only as needed (every 6–8 weeks). Regular ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care are essential. They are clean dogs with minimal doggy odor.

Whippets have an average lifespan of 12–15 years. Common health concerns include:
